Care of Featured Plant | Grevillea for Your Adelaide Lawn

About Grevilleas

Plants from the genus Grevillea are found in gardens all over Australia. There are numerous species that come in the form of anything from tall trees to shrubs to ground covers.

  • What makes them great garden plants is the fact that they’re evergreen, produce a diversity of distinctly beautiful blooms, and are native to the continent.
  • Grevilleas also typically produce nectar, which attracts pollinators, which is great if you want to maintain a healthy ecosystem in your garden.

Grevillea flowers come in the form of flower heads – that is, they’re composed of groups of tiny flowers that don’t necessarily bloom at the same time. They usually come in yellow, red and orange hues and some are fragrant. Because grevillea flowers boast a wide variety of shapes and forms, they are often classified according to appearance. Some are spider-like, for example, while others are toothbrush-like.

Growing and Taking Care of Grevilleas

  • These beautiful plants grow well in sunny environments and are generally hardy and drought-tolerant.
  • Grevilleas thrive in well-drained soil with lower levels of phosphates.
  • Sensitive as they are, it’s important to use soil mixtures formulated for native plants.
  • While they’re resilient, their tolerance to different kinds of cold and windy weather conditions will vary depending on the particular species.

Nourishing the soil with fertilizer twice a year (in early spring and late summer) is recommended.

  • Experienced gardeners recommend that you use aged cow manure.
  • Avoid using fresh manure as it may destroy the Grevillea’s roots.
  • Applying a layer of mulch at least 10cm across the garden beds will also help retain moisture and protect it from parasitic plants.
  • Grevilleas will greatly benefit from regular pruning to maintain its vigour and healthy appearance, especially older plants.
  • Among the most highly recommended species for gardens are “Poorinda Royal Mantle”, a great ground cover, and “Robyn Gordon”, a small shrub with bright red flowers.
